StonehamBank Community Development specialist Sharon Iovanni recently announced the Teach Children to Save Essay Contest for students in public or private schools in Billerica and Stoneham to celebrate national Teach Children to Save Day.

“We are excited and anxious to see the submissions,” says Iovanni. “StonehamBank is committed to supporting and providing opportunities for improving financial literacy, especially among our young residents. Our employees volunteer to teach FDIC Money Smart programs and Junior Achievement Skills for Life programs throughout the year. This contest is an extension of those efforts.”

The contest will run during the month of March and end on Friday, April 10 - the deadline date by which all submissions must be received. Winners from both Billerica and Stoneham areas will be officially announced on Friday, April 24, which is national Teach Children to Save day.

Teach Children to Save (TCTS) is an industry-wide initiative of the American Bankers Association that organizes banker volunteers to help young people develop a savings habit early in life. Since the program started in 1997 more than 177,000 bankers have taught savings skills to some 6 million students.

Students in grades K–5, 6-8 and 9-12 are being asked to write an essay on the topic of saving and spending to encourage them to learn and think more about the importance of saving, says Iovanni. Prizes will be offered to the best essay writers in each grade category from both the Stoneham and Billerica areas.

“One of our goals for this program” notes Iovanni, “is to get parents and kids talking about money, wants and needs, saving and spending and the importance these issues will play now and in their future. Families often struggle with how best to use their financial resources but sometimes, youngsters don’t get included in those conversations to keep them from worrying, which is understandable. This is an opportunity to have a conversation focused on money that is essentially worry-free.”

The TCTS Essay application and guidelines are available at both StonehamBank’s Billerica and Montvale branches, as well as on the bank’s website. You can also call 781-481-5736 if you have questions about the contest.
