StonehamBank Offers Fall Seminars

June 12, 2013

Stoneham, MA – Business Development Specialist Michele Fitzpatrick recently announced three business seminars planned for this coming fall at StonehamBank.

The series opens on Tuesday morning, September 24 with a discussion about Cost Segregation Studies led by Jeff Hiatt of MS Consultants, LLC.

“With the uptick in the economy and the new depreciation and capitalization rules enacted, cost segregation studies provide taxpayers with an opportunity to maximize deductions as assets are placed in service” says Hiatt. “This seminar will discuss the current IRS rules and regulations and court cases that impact the depreciable lives of the vast majority of assets. The course will also discuss the types of properties eligible for cost segregation studies and provide an in-depth overview of how studies are performed.”  Mr. Hiatt will also touch on Repair vs. Capitalization regulations issued by the IRS in late 2011 and “bonus” depreciation provisions extended by the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.

On Wednesday morning, October 9, Attorney Howard Brown will share insights on employee classification at the second workshop of the series. Attorney Brown will review changes to federal and state law and how the agencies’ “strategic enforcement” of those laws affect employers who misclassify workers. He will also cover employer obligations under Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disability Act, worker’s compensation and related laws and regulations pertaining to the hiring process. These topics encompass every business, from those with only one employee to those with thousands.

Finally, on Tuesday evening, November 19, Tim Halligan, President of the Exchange Authority, LLC, will offer a two hour seminar on 1031Tax Deferred Exchanges, which will offer CPE credits to realtors and CPAs. Discussion will include IRC §1031 Exchanges and Special Issues including definitions of basis, basis allocation, cost segregation issues, “Like Kind,” personal property exchanges and more.

“StonehamBank is committed to helping businesses in our community succeed,” says Fitzpatrick. “In addition to our banking and financing products,” she adds, “we offer a variety of educational seminars geared toward our business owners. We have experts discuss important topics and offer suggestions for which our customers would otherwise have to pay. Whether you are a long time business owner or just starting out, we provide valuable tools to help your company thrive.”
