StonehamBank’s Community Shred Day is set for Saturday, May 11 from 9 AM to 1 PM in the StonehamBank parking lots of the Billerica and Stoneham branches.

“Research shows that most identity thieves obtain information through traditional paper-based sources rather than electronic channels,” notes Shred-it Boston on their website, adding that  “…while laws and privacy policies help to keep companies in line and criminals in check, prevention is still the best course of action.”

The FTC ranked identity theft as the number one consumer fraud complaint, affecting more than 9 million Americans in 2009.  And, just like individuals, small business pays a hefty price when customer data is breached either by an untrustworthy employee or through a cyber attack.

“We all know how important it is to shred paperwork that might be useful to identity thieves,” adds StonehamBank Billerica Branch Manager Joe Smith. “It isn’t always convenient or easy to destroy the enormous amount of paperwork we tend to accumulate at home or in our business, and we think this is the perfect solution.”

“Shred-it Boston trucks will be onsite during the event hours,” adds StonehamBank Marketing Officer Josh Mahoney. “Anyone can bring paper to the truck and watch as it goes through the shredder, further assuring them that their documents are safely destroyed.”

At this year’s Shred Days, StonehamBank is also providing an opportunity to support the Stoneham and Billerica Food Pantries with donations of non-perishable grocery items.

Marie O'Rourke manages the Billerica Food Pantry. She indicates that the food pantry can use any non-perishable food items such as canned veggies, tuna, pasta, mac & cheese, soups, cereal, gelatin desserts, cookies and the like. The pantry, she notes, is funded by both monetary and food donations from companies and individuals, and serves approximately 150 families monthly with more than 200 families during holiday seasons. Without those donations, she concludes, fewer Billerica families would be served.

The Shred Days/Food Drive will be held at StonehamBank branches at 80 Montvale Avenue in Stoneham, and 493 Boston Road in Billerica.  Everyone who comes to the bank on May 11 will also have an opportunity to register to win a 32” LG LCD television.
